The principal of turning
When turning, a rotating workpiece (e.g. shaft, axis, bolt) is machined on the circumferential surface by a cutting tool (lathe tool, clamping holder with indexable insert) that is basically stationary or guided. The cutting tool is fed along the surface of the rotating workpiece and lifts chips of a defined thickness from the workpiece. The workpieces can generally be manufactured cylindrical, conical or with any outer contour.
Turning allows high precision when manufacturing workpieces. This is especially important in industries such as aerospace, space travel or medical technology, where high quality standards apply.
CNC lathes (Computer Numerical Control) allow precise control of the technical turning parameters and the tool position. This enhances the level of automation and precision in production.
